Resources for Meetings During Shelter in Place
The name of the Facebook Group is South Valley Alanon
Below is the latest information from the WSO website regarding meetings that are temporarily closed due to COVID-19.
Groups that modify how they are meeting or whether or not they are meeting are encouraged to communicate with the district and/or AIS, as the case may be. DRs, please share this information with you GRs for sharing with group members.
Tradition 4 tells us districts and AISs get to decide if they announce meeting changes on their meeting schedule and how those changes are announced. As always, we still have the same Traditions to follow. They keep us unified and aiming in the direction of our common purpose.
If your meeting format has changed, consider making a special effort to reach out and invite our newer members who may want to isolate. Consider making time to talk on the phone or try out an electronic meeting listed on the WSO website.
Don’t forget our Alateens.
As we walk through this situation, we are having to adjust to change. Things that were constant are temporarily not available. Yet we still have everything we had two days ago: each other and this life-changing program that allows us to make principle based decisions and walk and act with courage and grace, together. Together we can make it.
I encourage all of us to be mindful of seeking out reliable sources to make knowledge based decisions. Rumors can be just as destructive as gossip.
If there is anything I can do to support any member or service arms, please let me know.
HP is always in charge and more will be revealed.
Peace, love and joy in service,
The World Service Office (WSO) has received many queries from members regarding how groups, Districts, and Areas should function considering the novel coronavirus COVID-19. As a clearinghouse of information for the Al-Anon Family Groups, the WSO has no informed guidance to offer on health matters. As in every challenging situation though, our experience, strength, and hope encourage us to rely on the principles found in the Twelve Traditions and Twelve Concepts of Service to guide us. In this situation particularly, we recognize the wisdom expressed in Tradition Two which urges the WSO, Areas, Districts, and groups to rely upon “one authority—a loving God as He may express Himself in our group conscience.” To ensure our group conscience decisions regarding Staff safety and wellbeing at the WSO are informed and thoughtful, we monitor reliable local, national, and global health authority advisories daily to understand the ever-evolving situation. Based on current information from the Governor of Virginia, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), and the World Health Organization (WHO), the WSO is continuing business operations in the office as usual, while encouraging Staff who are ill, or are in direct contact with others who are ill, to stay at home until fully recovered. We have also implemented the proactive measures recommended to minimize the spread of the flu and COVID19. As of today, we are continuing with plans to hold our annual World Service Conference in Virginia Beach in April. If conditions change, the Board of Trustees will reevaluate and take an informed group conscience decision at that time, communicating the results to all who might be impacted. Similarly, in making informed decisions, we suggest groups, Districts, and Areas access national and local health authorities to gain the knowledge necessary to talk to each other and reason things out. In accordance with Tradition Four, we encourage groups to be flexible in considering alternatives that limit personal contact—anything from linking arms at the closing to temporarily holding the meeting electronically. Groups that choose this latter alternative need not register with the WSO as an Electronic Meeting unless the electronic platform becomes the group’s permanent format. Of utmost importance is providing an environment which allows Al-Anon newcomers and members the opportunity to feel safe and maintains the unity of the group. If your group is impacted and members are not able to meet in the scheduled location, please notify your local service arms. As a suggestion, group members may want to consider attending one of the many registered Electronic Meetings found on the Meetings tab at al-anon.org. Thank you for allowing us to continue to be of service to our Al-Anon Family Groups.
Dear Families and Friends of Alcoholics,
The World Service Office (WSO) is aware that at this time many Al‑Anon and Alateen groups have chosen to or been asked to suspend meeting as part of public health initiatives aimed at curbing the spread of COVID‑19 (the novel coronavirus) in our communities. The WSO does not have the resources to manually update the status of every registered group in a timely and accurate fashion nor can we easily modify the display of groups on our website on a temporary basis. Therefore, we urge anyone seeking a meeting to connect with a local Al‑Anon Information Service office to verify the current status before attending. If you should happen to attend a group that is temporarily not meeting, it will not be necessary to report this using the Report a Problem feature on this website. We are grateful for your cooperation, patience, and understanding as we continue providing the services our members rely on and as we adapt to this situation, one day at a time.

Good evening NCWSC — I trust this email finds you all healthy and well!
I appreciate the information that Jaya sent out and have taking some similar action for my Morgan Hill home meetings – our Church is closed and so the meeting in person are canceled for a couple of weeks. I read over the G39 Electronic Meetings Guideline and the Service Manual, to make sure that if I set up a Zoom meeting for my Morgan Hill meeting today that I wouldn’t be going against any Traditions or policies and I couldn’t see anything that I would be going against. I have a personal Zoom account and I have almost everyone’s phone number from our Morgan Hill meetings (my sponsor has instilled in me to get as many phone numbers as I can and encouraged me to make outreach calls and build a support network so I’m not dependent on her and I followed her suggestion – so I have lots of phone numbers) and so I set up a zoom call today and had a great turnout and the members loved being able to see each other on full action video and really appreciated the time together -in this time of social distancing, they where comforted by the ability to talk to and see each other. It warmed my heart. We will be repeating it again tomorrow night for our Monday night meeting and I’m going to work with D20 to set up the same options for meetings that the churches are closed or the meeting is choosing to not meet in person. I’ll keep you posted how it goes. I am also going to work with our Intergroup and have the webmaster start posting meetings that are not meeting because the churches are closed. I’m praying that this all blows over quickly – as they say — This too Shall Pass!
Zoom is the leader in modern enterprise video communications, with an easy, reliable cloud platform for video and audio conferencing, chat, and webinars across mobile, desktop, and room systems. Zoom Rooms is the original software-based conference room solution used around the world in board, conference, huddle, and training rooms, as well as executive offices and classrooms. Founded in 2011 …
FYI – Here’s some basic info on Zoom. I use Zoom several times a week for another group I belong to and it works out great – though facilitating a call was a bit more than just being a participant.
Basic is free and it’s $14.99/month for a pro membership – I’m providing some basic information — you can find out all you need to at https://zoom.us/pricing
What is the difference between the Basic and Pro plans?
Zoom offers a full-featured Basic Plan for free with unlimited meetings. Try Zoom for as long as you like – there is no trial period. Your Basic plan has a 40 minutes time limit on meetings with three or more total participants. Need your group meetings to last longer than 40 minutes? Sign up for a Pro Account here.
How many participants can join the meeting? How many people can use one host license?
All plans allow up to 100 participants by default in every meeting (up to 500 with Large Meeting add-on). You can host an unlimited number of meetings but if you would like to have more than one meeting concurrently, you will need additional host licenses.
What is a Host and what is a Participant?
A Participant is an invitee in a meeting scheduled by someone with a Host license. A Participant does not require a Zoom account in order to join a meeting. Participants can join a meeting from their phone, desktop, mobile and tablet devices.
NOTE: I don’t intend to register these Zoom meetings with WSO since they are short term solutions and I’m making sure they abide by the Traditions and Policies of Al-Anon.
That’s my 2 cents!
Blessings to you all to stay healthy and well and to have faith and trust God’s plan for us all!
